Iterations in Referring Expressions
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, research is done to examine the usefulness of ’iterations’ in generated referring expressions (that is, using multiple sentences to form a referring expression (with and/or without feedback from the hearer) as an expression instead of one long sentence, without any pause or breaks). Two experiments have been done, one to examine how humans use referring expressions and the second to examine the preference of iterated over non-iterated expressions. This research proves that for difficult to identify objects iterated expressions are useful.

The Prevalence of Descriptive Referring Expressions in News and Narrative
Generating referring expressions is a key step in Natural Language Generation. Researchers have focused almost exclusively on generating distinctive referring expressions, that is, referring expressions that uniquely identify their intended referent. While undoubtedly one of their most important functions, referring expressions can be more than distinctive. In particular, descriptive referring ...
متن کاملOSU-2: Generating Referring Expressions with a Maximum Entropy Classifier
Selection of natural-sounding referring expressions is useful in text generation and information summarization (Kan et al., 2001). We use discourse-level feature predicates in a maximum entropy classifier (Berger et al., 1996) with binary and n-class classification to select referring expressions from a list. We find that while mention-type n-class classification produces higher accuracy of typ...
متن کاملCoordination of referring expressions in multimodal human-computer dialogue
This study examines coordination of referring expressions in multimodal human-computer dialogue, i.e. to what extent users’ choices of referring expressions are affected by the referring expressions that the system is designed to use. An experiment was conducted, using a semi-automatic multimodal dialogue system for apartment seeking. The user and the system could refer to areas and apartments ...
متن کاملConcerning Referring Expressions in Query Answers
A referring expression in linguistics is a noun phrase that identifies individuals to listeners. In the context of a query over a first order knowledge base, referring expressions to answers are usually constant symbols. This paper motivates and initiates the exploration of allowing more general formulas, called singular referring expressions, to replace constants in this role. Referring expres...
متن کاملReferItGame: Referring to Objects in Photographs of Natural Scenes
In this paper we introduce a new game to crowd-source natural language referring expressions. By designing a two player game, we can both collect and verify referring expressions directly within the game. To date, the game has produced a dataset containing 130,525 expressions, referring to 96,654 distinct objects, in 19,894 photographs of natural scenes. This dataset is larger and more varied t...
